‘We don't know what the future holds': Pence says he's leaving D.C. In emotional farewell speech. Scotsman Comment: It's always darkest before the dawn. Muhammad Ali struck us in the middle of America's darkest night, in the heart of its most threatening gathering storm. His power toppled the mightiest of foes, and his intense light shined on America, and we were able to see clearly injustice, inequality, poverty, pride, self realization, courage, laughter, love, joy and religious freedom for all.

In MN, this is when it is the darkest for the longest. And so in honor of the longest darkest night, I'm making a plea to stop telling people that it's always darkest before the dawn. Now I get it, this phrase is used with good intentions. Often to give people hope when they are in their 'darkest times.' But you guys, it's crap.

Yet despite that, I'm reminded of Florence and the Machine's hit Shake it Out and the line 'It's always darkest before the dawn'. Released in 2011 it probably wasn't written bout infectious disease, but nonetheless the saying and the line holds truth at any time. Although I don't know the source of the quote, 'It's always darkest just before the dawn,' I would suggest it to be scientifically accurate, or at least as accurate as we can ever take generalized (albeit encouraging) statements such as these! The dictionary defines dawn as 'the FIRST appearance of light in the sky BEFORE sunrise.'.

Two questions for our Bible or Not quote today.
1) Is it true that it's darkest before the dawn?
2) Is the 'darkest before the dawn' quote found in the Bible?

'It is always darkest before the dawn.' – Bible or Not?

I have heard this quote many times, and most of us understand that these are words of encouragement to those going through 'dark' times. When all hope is lost, and you feel like your calamity will never lift, it's encouraging to believe that good times are right around the corner. The meaning of this quote, that even during the worst of times you can have hope, can be very powerful to help us take another step and live another day with hope of a better tomorrow.

But is it actually true that it's always darkest before the dawn, and is it in the Bible?

1) It is not true that it is darkest before the dawn. Scientifically, it is darkest at midnight, i.e., it is darkest at the time which is the midpoint from dusk (sundown) to dawn (sunrise). This is the point at which the sun is on the opposite side of the earth, from the point at which the night is observed. Or in other words, the point that is 180 degrees away from the sun.
